28th February 2022
On February 28 the annual international Rare Disease Day is a globally coordinated event to further improve equality in social opportunities, healthcare and accessibility to diagnosis and therapies for individuals living with rare diseases.
Rare Disease Day has played a critical part in building a international community since it was formed in 2008. At the beginning there were only 18 countries participating with events. However, the Rare Disease Day campaign has since 2019 it has been held in more than 100 countries.
Rare diseases affects fewer than 2000 people within the United Kingdom, this amounts to over 3.5 MILLION people within the general population being affected at some point during their lives. Whilst this figure dramatically increases to over 300 MILLION on a global scale.
Challenges that are associated with rare diseases is the lack of scientific knowledge, quality of information which often leads to misdiagnosis. However, progress continues to be made with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal to support equitable health care that meets the needs of individuals affected by rare diseases to ensure no one is left behind
